Chipmunks Are Squirrels Too
When we think of squirrels, we usually picture tree squirrels like grays and fox squirrels. However, chipmunks, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, and even woodchucks all belong to the same family—Sciuridae. Worldwide, there are over 200 squirrel species, found on every continent except Australia. Like all rodents, squirrels have teeth that never stop growing and cannot vomit.
Sizes Range From Tiny to Giant
Local tree squirrels—gray, fox, and red squirrels—are relatively similar in size. But worldwide, squirrel sizes vary dramatically. The African pygmy squirrel measures only about 5 inches long, while India’s giant squirrels can reach 3 feet in length and weigh up to 4 pounds, with strikingly colorful fur in shades of purple, orange, and maroon.
Their Hidden Food Often Gets Stolen
Squirrels prepare for winter by scatter hoarding—burying thousands of nuts in many small caches. However, they lose about 25% of these stored nuts to thieves like other squirrels or birds. To mislead potential robbers, squirrels sometimes perform “deceptive caching,” pretending to bury a nut while keeping it in their mouth.
They Zigzag to Escape Danger
When fleeing predators, squirrels don’t run in straight lines—they dart in rapid zigzag patterns. This makes it harder for hawks, coyotes, or foxes to catch them. Unfortunately, this same evasion tactic increases their risk of being hit by cars when crossing roads.
They Can Survive Falls From Any Height
Thanks to their small size and light weight, squirrels can survive falls from great heights. As they fall, they instinctively spread their bodies and extend their limbs, increasing wind resistance and allowing them to glide gently—similar to the way flying squirrels move through the air.
