Identifying the American White Pelican

The American White Pelican is easy to tell apart from the more familiar Brown Pelican because of its impressive size and bright coloration. Unlike the darker Brown Pelican, this species is a massive aquatic bird with a tall body, broad wings, and a large yellow to orange bill.

It is one of the largest birds found in North America. Its wingspan can extend to nearly 9 feet, making it an impressive sight when flying. The bird has bright white plumage, while its black flight feathers are only visible when its wings are fully extended.

The American White Pelican also has a large expandable throat pouch that can hold up to three gallons of water and stretch to around six inches in length. Although these birds can be seen across much of the western United States during migration, they mainly visit the Texas coastline during winter.

Breeding and Nesting Habits

American White Pelicans are colonial nesters, meaning they breed in large groups. During nesting season, breeding pairs create simple nesting sites by scraping away gravel, sand, and soil to form shallow depressions where they lay their eggs.

They usually select islands on freshwater lakes or areas with slightly salty water for breeding. A female typically lays between two and four eggs, and both parents take part in caring for the nest and protecting the young.

Newly hatched chicks are weak, unable to walk, and completely dependent on their parents. In the United States, breeding occurs in only a limited number of locations, mainly on lakes across the Great Plains and in Canada.

Young pelicans are rarely seen by visitors because they grow rapidly. By the time they arrive in Texas, most have already reached adult size and are difficult to distinguish from mature birds. They do not reach full maturity until around three years old and can live for 14 years or longer.

During the breeding season, some males develop a unique vertical growth on the top of their bills known as a “horn.” This structure disappears after breeding season and is believed to help indicate stronger or more desirable males to potential mates.

Although American White Pelicans are generally considered migratory birds, Texas has a small resident breeding population. Each year, approximately 200 to 500 pairs may breed in the Laguna Madre region, which is believed to be the only non-migratory colony of American White Pelicans.

Feeding Behavior and Diet

American White Pelicans are highly social birds that often travel together in large groups. While flying, they may form organized formations that resemble a squadron.

Unlike Brown Pelicans, which commonly plunge into the water from the air to catch fish, American White Pelicans usually feed while swimming. They move across the water’s surface, lowering their large bills and using their expandable pouches to scoop up prey.

Their diet consists mainly of fish species that are generally not highly valued by recreational or commercial anglers. In the past, many people mistakenly believed these birds competed with fishermen for important fish populations and hunted them as a result.

Later research showed that American White Pelicans do not significantly compete with humans for commercially important fish. Thanks to improved understanding and conservation efforts, their populations have increased.

Today, large groups of American White Pelicans can once again be seen migrating through areas such as Central Texas, creating a spectacular sight as they travel together across the landscape.
