Easy Ways to Paint Watercolor Tulips

I’m really happy to share a brand-new video with you where I explore seven creative and approachable ways to paint watercolor tulips. When I filmed this lesson, tulips were blooming all across Dallas, Texas. Seeing all those rich colors and unique petal shapes inspired me to put together this watercolor tulip tutorial. Since tulips come in so many varieties, it felt like the perfect subject to demonstrate different brush approaches and watercolor effects. No matter what materials you have at home, you’ll be able to follow along and find a method that suits your style.

The Traditional Tulip

We begin with a classic tulip shape—simple, elegant, and perfect for warming up your hand. Think of a soft teardrop form filled with shades like coral, magenta, or soft pink.

Loose, Expressive Tulips

Next, we’ll explore a more relaxed painting style. Here, we let the paint flow freely, blending warm tones such as red, pink, and orange to create lively, organic tulips full of movement.

Layered Petal Technique

This approach focuses on building translucent washes step by step. By layering color gradually and lifting highlights, we can achieve depth, softness, and a more dimensional floral look.

Wet-on-Wet Tulips

In this section, we dive into the wet-on-wet method, where pigments merge directly on damp paper. The result is soft edges, natural blends, and dreamy transitions that make your tulips feel light and fluid.
