Clear Lake, Northern California — North America’s Ancient Lake

Nestled in Lake County, California, Clear Lake is widely considered one of the oldest natural lakes in North America. Geological studies suggest that lakes have existed in this location for about 2.5 million years, though the lake in its current form is at least 480,000 years old.

Clear Lake sits atop an enormous block of rock that gradually tilts northward. At the same rate that sediment accumulates on its floor, the tilting helps maintain its depth—preventing the lake from filling in and disappearing over time.

Size, Ecology, and Water Features

The lake spans about 68 square miles.

It features over 100 miles of shoreline, with maximum depths near 60 feet in some areas.

Clear Lake supports a diverse ecosystem. Among its fish are largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, and rainbow trout. Birdlife is also abundant—including pelicans, bald eagles, and a variety of waterfowl.

Settlers in the late 1800s named it “Clear Lake,” referencing the region’s clearest air and absence of fog rather than water clarity.

Today, it’s a popular spot for boating, water skiing, swimming, fishing, and relaxing lakeside.

Environmental Concerns

Despite its long-standing history and natural beauty, Clear Lake has been affected by contamination—most notably from the Sulphur Bank Mercury Mine, which has raised concerns about fish safety, particularly for pregnant women and children.
