Black-billed magpies (Pica hudsonia) are common across Alberta and many parts of western Canada. Although some people consider them troublesome because of their fearless, curious, and sometimes playful behavior, these birds are actually among the most remarkable species in the bird world.

There are around 18 species of magpies found around the globe, but the black-billed magpie is the only species native to Canada. These birds belong to the Corvidae family, which also includes crows, ravens, and jays. Their intelligence also allows them to recognize individual human faces. In one study, researchers tested this ability by having two people wear identical clothing, and the magpies were still able to distinguish between them.

Observers have also reported seeing magpies leave the area and return carrying pieces of grass, which they place beside the dead bird. This behavior has drawn comparisons to mourning rituals seen in humans.
